Each October, the Episcopal Church Woman's group (ECW) sponsors an annual stew stirring. The ECW typically prepares the ingredients for the stew during fellowship on the night before the event, using an age-old traditional recipe passed down for generations. The men of the church and from the surrounding area, begin the outdoor fires near the pavilion before sunrise. The stew is constantly stirred in huge antique cast iron caldrons suspended over the fires. The men stir the stew in shifts using large stainless steel oars until it is ready. Once ready, the stew is sold in quart containers as a fund raiser for the ECW community support events. Hundreds of people from across Cumberland, Powhatan and Goochland counties come to support the event by either purchasing stew or attending the luncheon hosted by the ECW. Come and enjoy our stew or grab a stirring oar and join the fun!
Each year on Shrove Tuesday, the St. James Men's group hosts the annual Pancake Supper. A Baber family recipe including whipped egg whites, is used to make the extra fluffy pancakes. Home-made sausage is served along with baked apples and warm maple syrup. Families from around the surrounding area come to enjoy great food and fellowship. Virtually every space in the parish hall (and pavilion if the weather is nice) is packed with kids and their families filling their bellies to the brim! All proceeds from the Pancake Supper are donated to local charities involved with feeding the hungry in our communities. We would love for you to join us!
We have some wonderful, very skilled bakers in our parish. Every October in conjunction with the Stew Stirring, the ladies of the church hold a bake sale to support the ECW and other community events. From pies and pastries, to breads and cookies, parishioners bring in treats for sale to the community. A favorite and fun tradition is the raffling of a huge pound cake made each year by one of our choir members. Some families come to stock their freezers for the upcoming holidays. Some members are even known to dress in Halloween costumes for the event! Come and check out the goodies!
In October, it's time for everyone to clean out their garage, toy box and kitchen cabinets for the annual church yard sale. The second floor of the parish hall serves as the site for a rummage sale. You can't beat the prices since most items are sold at a dollar or less. Most folks browse the tables and can typically find that perfect glass dish or kitchen items for a college-bound student at a great price. Proceeds benefit the ECW and other community projects. Whatever is not sold, makes its way as donations to various charitable organizations. Maybe you have a student, a newly-wed couple or someone in your life who could use some kitchen or other household supplies. Come view the tables!
The men's group is comprised of men of all faiths (and non-faith) and backgrounds. About half of the group is affiliated with St. James. The rest of the group is made of men from other parts of Cumberland and Powhatan counties and even some from Richmond. The group typically joins for a pot-luck meal, conversation and fellowship on the second Wednesday of each month. The group typically sponsors a community based non-profit organization servicing the needs of the disadvantaged in the area. The men's group also typically holds a summer picnic and Christmas party, hosted by one of the members. Come and join us. All are welcome!
The Episcopal Church Women's group includes the women of the church and other friends of the church. Throughout the year, the women support various community outreach projects. They also gather for fellowship and to enjoy lunch at a members house in which they all bring a dish.
